While reading the paper the other day I came across an article written by Emily Kowal headed Women swap Mr Right for having a baby right now.

The article highlighted the current trend of women deciding to have a baby “now” and using IVF rather than with a male partner.

Understandable, given the biological clock in all of us but is it wise?

I would say “no” to this as IVF should be a last resort and you should prepare your body for conception – whether natural or laboratory assisted.

Pre-conception preparation

Whether this may sound too hard, or you don’t want to wait, it is the foundation of both improved fertility and birthing a healthy child.

You can read all about the intricacies and reasons behind this statement in my book and previous blogs. The arguments for preparation are incontrovertible.

The costs involved in IVF will vary widely between clinics, cities and countries. In Australia, where IVF is subsidised, out-of-pocket expenses per cycle are around $6,000 but can be as high as $15,000. Successful outcomes vary greatly and will depend largely on:

(1) the health of the woman’s ova, and

(2) the health of the male sperm.

Preparation also improves chances of successful IVF implantation proceeding to a live birth.

It’s also valid to consider what actually happens to embryos when they are frozen to aid in your decision.

It’s the outcome that matters

Regardless of how you ultimately decide to conceive, please learn about the importance of preparing your (and, if possible, your partner’s) body well prior to fall pregnant.

It’s a good time of year to stop, reflect and empower yourself for the year ahead. Get a copy of my book, whether for yourself or a friend.
