As the quest to start a family becomes more elusive, it’s time to take charge. What do I mean by that? If you have been trying to conceive but it just isn’t happening, you are not alone. You are part of a growing statistical group that is experiencing fertility issues.

So what is causing the rise in numbers of men and women experiencing infertility? As with most things related to our health, there are a number of factors that influence fertility. And, these factors also play a significant role in the health of babies that are being born today.

In my book, “How to Have a Healthy Baby” I explain how environmental toxins, nutrition and genetics play a role in both fertility and the health of your baby throughout its entire life. This places an onus on, but also empowers, parents to positively affect their ability to conceive, as well as the health of their future children and grandchildren.

Does this peak your interest? Well, it should. I wish I had known this when I was pregnant with my children – a sentiment shared by many readers who have been kind enough to leave a review on Amazon. Truth is, we just don’t know how much of what is happening around us, and within us, affects our reproductive capacity and the health of our children.

We live in a toxic world

Never before in recorded history have we been exposed to such a great number and variety of man-made chemicals. Perhaps the most pervasive group are those contained in every-day products we all use – personal care items. These include everything from shampoos and soaps, to moisturisers, sunscreen, deodorant, and perfumes. You will find a more comprehensive list in Chapter 4 of my book along with household items and job-related toxins.

Why are these chemicals so bad for us and our baby?

One of the main reasons is that many chemicals, especially those used in the manufacturer of plastics, disrupt our hormones. They are known as endocrine disrupters and they not only affect the hormones of adults, but also to a greater extent, our children.

One area that may be seriously affected by endocrine disrupting chemicals is gender development in utero. The number of young people experiencing strong and confusing emotions regarding their birth genders in increasing.

Chemicals that adversely affect our hormones have been used on foods we eat, crops fed to animals we eat, used as herbicides and pesticides both commercially and in homes, added to personal care products, and plastics so widely used today it’s difficult to imagine a planet without them. The cumulative effects of these chemicals spans generations and we are beginning to witness this in people of varying age. The dysphoria they are experiencing is (mostly) very real as their genes code for one gender but the hormones are totally out of balance.

You CAN make a difference

Perhaps a place to begin addressing these issues, in addition to raising awareness of the many endocrine disrupting chemicals in our environment, is in pre-conception preparation (for both partners) and during pregnancy. While we are surrounded by these toxic chemicals there are ways to avoid exposure and help the body clear them out before conceiving a child. The mother then has the responsibility to continue this awareness and support her unborn child by continuing a healthy lifestyle throughout her pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Obviously, these principles would continue as the child grows. The concept of having healthy babies and children is one that I consider the foundation of future generations – as we need to reverse the cycle of chronic disease, to which we can add gender dysphoria.

Improving fertility = improving baby’s health outcomes

The many factors negatively impacting fertility also affect the health outcomes of your unborn baby. Take the time to read my book and learn how both parents can benefit from making a few lifestyle changes and undertaking pre-conception preparation.
