You will have noted my repeated advice to always seek the guidance of a qualified health professional. What I find even more frustrating than well-meaning untrained advice is that given by people who should know better. The following is an example of dubious advice given by an obstetrician when asked what the best dietary source of iron was. Where most people answer red meat, the OB said “cereal”.
I cannot believe this myth still exists, let alone coming from what one would expect to be a qualified health professional. The iron in fortified cereal probably won’t improve your iron status much. But it is not only the form of this iron but also the combination of foods it is consumed with. We must consider absorption and the form of iron, not just the iron content of any given food.
When it comes to your diet and nutritional health, it is always best to consult a qualified naturopath as there is so much mis-information that sorting through it all can be very daunting (and possibly detrimental to your health).
