This statement is often heard when pregnant in relation to consuming substances that could be harmful to the unborn baby. It is also highly relevant in relation to taking herbal medicines to relieve infection. When expecting ladies contact me with cold or ‘flu-like symptoms asking what they can take, the options are limited.
When it comes to relieving cold or ‘flu symptoms, herbal medicines rank highly. However, during the early stages of pregnancy, many herbs are contraindicated, as indeed are many medicines. I have already discussed the dangers of paracetamol during pregnancy in an earlier post.
Minerals and immune support
Taking specific mineral combinations may help alleviate nasal or chest congestion and mild fever. Tissue salts are safe and effective, especially when taken at the first sign of symptoms. For example:
Iron phosphate or Ferrum phos can assist with the acute immune response while also balancing iron levels, reducing inflammation and low grade fevers. It has been known to relieve sore throats and headaches. Potassium chloride or Kalium mur supports the second stages of inflammation, protecting and healing mucous membranes relieving nasal and chest congestion. Potassium sulphate or Kalium sulph supports the third stage of inflammation as well as low grade fevers. Generally taken when cough becomes purulent (that is yellow, thick or even greenish mucous)as it aids expectoration and fights airway infection.
Natural immune support
Eating a varied whole foods, preferably organic diet as well as ensuring adequate rest will help support your natural immunity.
Regular hand washing with soap and water remains the best method to prevent infection.
Other nutrients that support a healthy immune response include zinc, magnesium, selenium and natural forms of Vitamins A, E, D and C, as well as the B-group. You will find more information about nutrients in my book, How to Have a Healthy Baby.
Foods that act as natural antibiotics and antivirals are onions and garlic.
Of course, gut health cannot be omitted from mention when discussing immune health – you will find valuable information on the importance of gut health in my book.
Prevention is always better than cure, but if you find yourself coming down with symptoms, the above information may be of assistance.
As with all remedies, it is always recommended that you seek the advice and support of a qualified natural health practitioner who can provide quality products and advice on dosages.
